| 2008-02-13 | Mike McDonald (2006), poker winner |
 |
Mike McDonald, a 2006 grad, has been making the headlines lately for becoming the youngest person to win a major European poker event. He beat a field of veterans to win a $1.4 million pot in the European Poker Tour German Open on Saturday, February 2.
From media to old classmates and potential sponsors, everyone has been trying to get in touch with him.
Mike is being modest about his win, warning that most people will never make much money playing poker.
Mike follows in the path of 18-year-old William Ma, also a W.C.I. grad, who cleared more than $600,000 winning the Grand Prix de Paris last year. |

| 2006-11-06 | Veteran's Green Memorial in W.C.I. neighbourhood |
 |
The Veteran's Green memorial was unveiled at the corner of University Avenue and Hazel Street Sunday, November 5. Over a thousand people, including veterans, current military personnel, Lt. Governor James Bartlemen, and members of the community were on hand to dedicate Timothy Schmalz's statue.
The statue commemorates the veterans who have returned home and aged over time. The statue features a veteran in a wheelchair supported by soldiers representing 200 years of Canadian Armed Services. Likenesses were inspired using images of Waterloo's veterans collected over the past year from the local community.
Cpl. Ryan Pagnacco played a lament on the bagpipes between the Last Post and Reveille.
Veteran's Green was dedicated last year to commemorate the Hillcrest housing development between Dearborn (now University Ave) and Hill (now Hickory St) built specifically for returning veterans in 1946. |
